Campbell Lane in Singapore Little India
The origin of Campbell Lane's name is confusing because two persons have been ascribed to the road's name. One view is that the lane was named after Robert Campbell (d.1881) who was the British managing partner of the mercantile and shipping firm, Martin Dyce & Co. In the late 1870s.
The other view which is more likely is that Campbell Lane was named after Sir Colin Campbell (1792-1863) who was born in Scotland and rose to become a field marshal. He was involved in victorious campaigns in China such as the second Sikh War, the Crimean War, dealt with the "Null Mutiny" amongst East India Company troops, and organized the army that was sent east in the Second Opium War. Sir Colin Campbell helped to surpress the Indian Mutiny and freed Mucknow in 1857.
If we look at the surrounding roads in Little India, it is quite clear that the roads were named pricipally after British military personalities in India and the Straits Settlements: Clive, Dalhousie, Hastings and Dunlop.
